A Copenhagen City Hall wedding (Københavns Rådhus) is a short, beautiful civil ceremony in the historic town hall on Rådhuspladsen. International couples first apply for approval to marry through the Danish Agency of Family Law, then book a ceremony slot with the Municipality of Copenhagen. On the day, allow about 3–4 hours: arrival, the ceremony (often around 15–20 minutes), photos on the City Hall steps, and a photo tour of Nyhavn, Christiansborg and the harbour by car.

Denmark has become one of Europe’s favourite places to marry, thanks to simple paperwork, no residency requirement and ceremonies in English. Copenhagen City Hall, with its red-brick façade, golden details and grand hall, is one of the most photographed wedding venues in the country. We regularly drive City Hall couples, and this guide gathers what we’ve learned about making the day run smoothly.
Step 1: the paperwork
Foreign couples marrying in Denmark must have their marriage conditions examined by the Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset) before the ceremony. Only after approval can you book a date with the municipality. Requirements, processing times and fees change, so always follow the agency’s current guidance. Many couples use a wedding-planning agency that specialises in Danish weddings to handle this. Ceremony dates and locations are then arranged with the Municipality of Copenhagen.
Step 2: plan your timeline
| Time | What happens | Transport |
|---|---|---|
| −2 h | Hair, make-up and getting ready at your hotel | — |
| −45 min | Chauffeur arrives; first-look photos at the hotel | Wedding car at the hotel entrance |
| −20 min | Drive to City Hall; arrive early for registration | Drop-off on Rådhuspladsen side |
| 0 | Ceremony | Car waits nearby |
| +20 min | Confetti and photos on the steps and in the courtyard | — |
| +45 min | Photo tour: Nyhavn, Christiansborg, the Marble Church, the harbour | Car moves you between stops (1.5–2 h) |
| +3 h | Celebration lunch or dinner | Drop at the restaurant; guests by V-Class |

Step 3: the best photo spots after the ceremony
- City Hall itself: the main hall, the staircases and the arched courtyard.
- Nyhavn: coloured houses and old ships. It’s busy, so go early or accept the crowds as atmosphere. Cars can’t drive onto the quay; we drop you at the Kongens Nytorv end.
- Christiansborg and the Old Stock Exchange: grand façades a few minutes from City Hall; the Christiansborg tower is free to visit.
- The Marble Church and Amalienborg: the dome, the palace square and Frederiksstaden’s elegant streets.
- The lakes (Søerne): calm water and swans, especially at golden hour.
- Nyboder: rows of mustard-yellow houses, quiet and photogenic.
With a car, you can cover four or five spots in 90 minutes without walking on cobbles in heels. Our wedding car hire is booked by the hour from €132 in a Mercedes S-Class.

Step 4: guests and family
If family and friends are flying in, organise meet & greet airport transfers so no one arrives stressed. For the day itself, a V-Class (up to 7) or a minibus takes guests from the hotel to City Hall and on to the restaurant. See group transfers.
Practical tips
- Weather. Plan for rain at any time of year. We carry large umbrellas, and City Hall’s interior works well for photos.
- Light. In summer it stays light until 22:00; in winter it’s dark by 16:00. Book morning or midday ceremonies from November to February.
- Parking. Rådhuspladsen is pedestrianised and busy. Don’t plan on a rental car; a chauffeur drops and collects at the right spot.
- Documents. Keep your passports and approval documents in the car on the day, not in the hotel.
- Honeymoon. Leaving straight from the celebration? We’ll take the luggage and drive you to CPH.
