Most visitors expect Denmark to be flat, and it mostly is, which makes its chalk cliffs all the more striking. Møns Klint is dramatic: white cliffs, beech forest on top and turquoise water below. Stevns Klint is quieter and scientifically famous as one of the best places in the world to see the layer marking the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Møns Klint

  • GeoCenter Møns Klint: an interactive museum on geology, fossils and the Ice Age. See moensklint.dk.
  • The stairs to the beach: several hundred steps down and back up. Allow time and good shoes.
  • Beach walk: fossils, flint and views of the cliffs from below.
  • Liselund: a romantic 18th-century park nearby.
  • Stege: the island’s medieval town, good for lunch.

Stevns Klint

Stevns Klint stretches for about 15 km along the east coast of Zealand. At Højerup Old Church, part of the building fell into the sea in 1928 when the cliff collapsed, and the rest still stands at the edge. The cliff face shows the “fish clay” layer from the end of the Cretaceous period. It’s a UNESCO site because of this, as described by UNESCO.
