Chauffeur vs Rental Car in Denmark: Tolls, Parking and the True Cost

Comparing a chauffeur vs car rental in Denmark: renting is cheaper if you’re touring Jutland for a week and parking outside cities. For a Copenhagen-based trip, the real cost of a rental car (daily rate, insurance, fuel or charging, hotel parking, street parking in the centre and bridge tolls of DKK 235 on the Great Belt and DKK 470 on the Øresund) adds up quickly. For short stays, day trips, groups and business travel, a chauffeur often costs similar or less, with no driving, parking or drink-drive worries.

Many visitors land at Copenhagen Airport, walk past the rental desks and wonder whether they should pick up a car. Denmark is easy to drive in: good roads, polite drivers, clear signs. Copenhagen itself is a different story. The city is designed around bicycles and public transport, and parking is scarce and expensive. Here is how the numbers work out.

What a rental car really costs in Copenhagen

Cost Typical 2026 range Notes
Rental (mid-size or premium) €60–150 per day Higher in summer; one-way and cross-border fees extra
Excess-reduction insurance €15–35 per day Optional but advisable
Fuel or charging Varies Denmark’s fuel prices are among Europe’s highest
Hotel parking DKK 200–450 per night At central hotels, when available
Street parking, central zone Around DKK 40+ per hour Time-limited, strictly enforced
Øresund Bridge (to Sweden) DKK 470 per crossing at the booth Øresundsbron prices
Great Belt Bridge (to Funen/Jutland) DKK 235 per crossing by card Sund & Bælt prices
Environmental zone — Copenhagen’s low-emission zone mainly affects diesel vans and trucks; most rental cars comply

Ranges are indicative. Check your rental company and hotel for exact prices.

Worked examples

A 4-day Copenhagen city break for two

Rental: 4 days’ rental plus insurance (~€300–600), hotel parking for 3 nights (~DKK 600–1,350), some street parking, plus fuel. You’ll barely use the car in the city, where walking, bikes and the metro are faster. Chauffeur: airport transfers both ways (€245) and one 4-hour sightseeing or dinner evening (€480). Verdict: the chauffeur costs about the same or less, and you don’t have to drive.

A family of five, 5 days, with day trips to Kronborg and Legoland

Rental: a 7-seat car for 5 days, insurance, fuel for about 800 km, two Great Belt crossings (DKK 470) and hotel parking. Chauffeur: V-Class airport transfers (€300), one 8-hour Kronborg/Louisiana day (€1,000) and a Legoland return trip (fixed quote). Verdict: the rental is cheaper, but the chauffeur is more relaxing, especially for the long Legoland drive. Hire a chauffeur for the big days and use public transport in the city.

A business trip with meetings in Copenhagen and Malmö

Rental: car, parking at every meeting, an Øresund crossing each way (DKK 940) and no working time while you drive. Chauffeur: one day of hourly hire with the bridge tolls included in the quote. Verdict: the chauffeur almost always makes more sense for business: you work in the back seat and bill one invoice.

When renting a car makes sense

  • Road trips of a week or more across Jutland, Funen or southern Sweden
  • Staying in a summer house outside the city
  • Travellers who enjoy driving and are comfortable with Danish cycling rules (cyclists have priority at most junctions, and right turns across bike lanes need great care)

When a chauffeur makes sense

  • City breaks where you’d barely use a car
  • Day trips where you want to drink wine at lunch or with dinner (Denmark’s limit is 0.5‰)
  • Groups, where one V-Class replaces two rental cars
  • Business travel
  • Arrivals after long flights, when driving tired is a bad idea
