Alongside the grand old names, a wave of design-led boutique hotels has opened in converted post offices, conservatories, warehouses and power stations. We drive guests to all of them, so this guide adds the practical detail that reviews miss: which area suits which trip, and how long it takes to get there from the airport.

The grand classic: Hotel d’Angleterre
Facing Kongens Nytorv at the top of Nyhavn, d’Angleterre has welcomed royalty and celebrities for centuries. It has a Michelin-starred restaurant (Marchal), a spa with an indoor pool and one of the best bars in the city. If you want the most “Copenhagen” address possible, this is it. See Copenhagen Michelin restaurants.
The romantic one: Nimb
Inside Tivoli, the Nimb building with its domes and minarets houses a small, luxurious hotel with rooms overlooking the Gardens. The magic is strongest at Christmas and in summer, when Tivoli is lit up at night. Arrive by car on Bernstorffsgade, not the Tivoli entrance. See Copenhagen Christmas by car.
The design statement: Villa Copenhagen
Villa Copenhagen occupies the grand former Central Post Office next to the station, with a heated rooftop pool and a strong sustainability ethos. It’s very convenient for trains to Malmö and for the airport.
The boutique favourites: Sanders, Nobis, Herman K
Hotel Sanders, tucked behind the Royal Danish Theatre, feels like a stylish private home. Nobis sits in a historic former music conservatory building near Tivoli, with calm Scandinavian interiors. Herman K is a small, design-led hotel in a converted transformer station close to Kongens Nytorv. All three suit travellers who prefer character and quiet over grandeur.

The modernist icon: Radisson Collection Royal
Designed by Arne Jacobsen, down to the furniture and cutlery, and famous as one of the first design hotels in the world. Room 606 is preserved in his original style. The upper floors have some of the best views over the city.
